Flash Fiction Workshop

101 Words

My micro-fiction “Potato Eyes” is featured in 101 Words this week.

I like challenging myself with writing exercises using a tight word count. This story grew out of a flash fiction workshop I taught at last year’s Goat Hill Workshop-Palooza event. The first sentence had been haunting me for a while, and I knew I had to write a story around it. I chose second person plural narration because I wanted to convey the sense of a whole community living among these kidnapped girls, seeing them and yet not seeing them.

2017 News

Flash fiction news: My story “Three Grandfathers” is included in Issue 18 of Thrice Fiction. The magazine is available as a free download in PDF, Kindle, or ePub format from Thrice Publishing, or as a print purchase.

And more workshops and readings are planned for 2017. I’ll be taking part in Goat Hill Writers’ Workshop-Palooza again this spring! Watch for updates on this full day of writing workshops that lets writers sample different classes.

Food, Friends, Fiction!

Join us Friday, November 18 at Fresh Table on Hope Street in Bristol. We’ll be celebrating the release of my new flash fiction chapbook, Girls on Film, with an evening of local food & drinks, a rapid-fire reading & open mic, and a raffle with unique, bookish, and fun prizes for anyone who buys a copy of Girls on Film.

Girls on Film chapbook coverThe book party is from 6:30-8 p.m., and it coincides with the Bristol Merchants Association’s 15th Annual Holiday Preview Weekend, a chance to stroll Bristol’s historic downtown and “shop small” to support local business. The streets will be decorated with luminaries, and you’ll feel as if you’ve walked into a real-life Stars Hollow.

I’ll be available to sign copies, and we’ll have a short reading, Q & A, and open mic. If you can’t make it to the party, you can still stop into Fresh Table anytime and pick up your copy of Girls on Film, grab a cup of coffee, and work on a puzzle while enjoying a piece of pie. That’s the kind of place it is.

Flash Fiction Workshop – Last Week for Registration Specials!

Take the Flash Fiction Challenge.

Do you need a little nudge to keep you writing through November?

I’m leading a flash fiction workshop that will challenge writers to create five original flash fiction pieces in four weeks. The workshop meets every Saturday in November (except Thanksgiving weekend) and ends the first weekend in December.

Fiction writers, poets, writers new to flash fiction, and experienced writers looking for deadlines, a challenge, and inspiration are all welcome to attend. If you sign up before the end of October, there’s a 25% discount off the $225 fee; sign up with a friend, and one of you can get 50% off.

I’m also offering a limited number of full and partial scholarships to those with financial need. For more information, a registration form, and a link to contact me, visit kathrynkulpa.com/flashfic. I hope to see you for a month of writing in November!

Book Launch Party for Girls on Film

Join me in celebrating the release of my new chapbook Girls on Film, a winner of the Paper Nautilus Vella Chapbook Contest.

Mark the date: Friday, November 18, from 6:30-8:30 (reading begins at 7:30). The location is Fresh Table, located at 423 Hope Street in historic Bristol, Rhode Island.

We’ll have books for sale; a raffle with crave-worthy prizes, bookish and otherwise; local food and creative cocktails; original art puzzles to play with; and a rapid-fire reading and open mic. It’s also the start of the Bristol Holiday Preview Weekend, and a perfect chance to stroll downtown Bristol and support local business.

If you can’t join the party, you can still buy a copy of Girls on Film from Fresh Table, either online or in their fun and eclectic digs in downtown Bristol.

Five Stories in Four Weeks – Scholarship Available!

I want to make my November flash fiction workshop series, “Five Stories in Four Weeks,” accessible to all writers. So I’m offering a “pay what you can” scholarship, and I’m keeping it REALLY simple.

flashficThe class is focused on flash fiction. It’s an alternative to NaNoWriMo, for those who don’t have the time to commit to writing a full novel in one month–or those who just prefer the brevity and concision of the short form.

The course fee is $225, or $58/session as a drop-in. There is also a 25% discount for early registration (by October 31) and a 50% discount for a friend if you register together.

Register for the workshop right here.

But if you’re a writer who struggles to pay the bills, $225 can be a big commitment. So I’d like to welcome anyone who thinks writing classes are too expensive or inaccessible to apply for a scholarship simply by sending me an email. Just describe your economic situation and any challenges/expenses you have (for example, if you need to pay for child care to attend a workshop), let me know what you can afford to pay (even if it’s nothing!), and tell me why this writing class would help you meet your own writing goals.

Send your scholarship letter to katekulpa (at) gmail.com.

And if you don’t need a scholarship, but would like to contribute to sponsoring a scholarship for other writers, let me know that, too!

You Know You Want To.

The workshop meets Saturday mornings, 10-12, on November 5, 12, and 19 and December 3, 2016.

Location: School One, 220 University Avenue, Providence, RI.

Note: The workshop series is $225. If you have already registered and sent in your deposit, you are automatically eligible for the 25% discount. If a friend registers, they should just mention that you referred them, and they will be eligible for a 50% discount.
